Nothing is quite like returning to a sport you haven’t played in more than 35 years to deliver a dose of crushing humility and remind you of just how much you’ve aged. I dragged my creaky knees back on the tennis court because of the buzz generated by the greats Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic, and Rafael Nadal, who by then had cumulatively racked up an amazing 64 major titles. My plan was to copy at least some of their workout and practice routines to improve my game and increase my overall level of fitness. All three players are legendary in their practice habits, and I was impressed by their commitment to sheer repetition. Among them, they’ve probably hit enough balls to reach the moon and back a few times over, but they keep getting out there, repeating the same shots and drills in pursuit of perfection.
