When to use layers

There are of course no hard and fast rules on when to use layers, and when not to use layers. Best practises regarding diagramming may suggest that you should use layers to group all logical parts of a diagram together.

If you are new to diagramming, it may be tempting to place each shape on a layer on its own. OmniGraffle will not stop you from doing this—however, this will take the efficiency and pleasure out of your diagramming work as you will have an overwhelming numbers of layers to deal with.
