A Personal History of Web Search

In 1995, just prior to public release, we discovered a problem with the Alta Vista search engine: most of the time searching worked just fine, but sometimes the results were highly repetitive. We knew that the search engine would not always present the best answer first, so Alta Vista would offer ten different URLs as potential answers to each query. Usually, these answers were varied and diverse, so that a query for “jaguar” might produce suggestions ranging from animals to cars to computer operating systems.
