IT SEEMS OBLIGATORY to include something from the writings of Vo Nguyen Giap in this book. General Giap (with Ho Chi Minh, d. 1969) is credited with North Vietnam’s victory over the French (1945–54), the founding of the Communist Peoples’ Republic of Vietnam (PRVN), and the unification of Vietnam by conquering the Republic of (South) Viet Nam (RVN) (1954–75), supported by the United States. America’s goal was to create a democratic RVN, but in the 1960s she had to send ever-greater numbers of U.S. troops to reinforce the Army of South Vietnam (ARVN).
