Chapter 8. Gaming

Online gaming can take many forms. There are online board and card games, role-playing games (RPGs), and multiplayer games against other humans or against a computer (some of these are “total world” gaming environments). There are sites that have a few simple games and games that involve many players. There are games that don't seem like games at all. The point isn't winning, but communicating with other people and spending time occupied while you chat. It's a huge subject.

Forrester Research estimates that online gaming will be worth $3.2 billion by 2005. They note that this growth is driven by online competitive games that have mass-market appeal, a shift away from single-person games.
