Streaming media encoders, servers, and players must have a way to communicate with each other. They are able to convert files to and from the streaming media format. This is where protocols and codecs come in.

Protocols are a set of rules to determine how communication takes place between software applications. There are a number of different streaming media protocols in use, such as RTSP (Real Time Streaming Protocol), RTP (Real Time Protocol), and MMS (Microsoft Media Server).
