Many state transportation departments now offer webcam views of mountain passes, bridges, traffic bottleneck points, busy commute streets, freeways, and so forth. This is a boon for the commuter or traveler. It's easy to decide whether a midwinter trip through a mountain pass is a good idea or not with a quick peek at the current weather conditions. It's one thing to hear that there are snow flurries, another to see that the webcam is in total whiteout. And the ability to check the traffic cams before a morning commute is valuable in locating alternate routes to avoid trouble spots.
