4Advantages, Disadvantages and Issues Related to Collaborative Innovation
Open innovation and collaborative innovation come from the field of innovation management and technology management. This model of innovation has been used and studied in Research and Development (R&D) activities in various sectors. The fields of business strategy and organizational behavior are interested in open innovation and the possible strategies to implement. Indeed, it appears that this approach to innovation is growing in a plurality of ways, in social sciences in particular. Moreover, open innovation is not confined to large companies with greater resources and possibilities than small and medium-sized enterprises. The same is true for the sectors using it. Whether they are focused on new technologies, traditional manufacturing of mainstream products or niche production, collaborative innovation has a great future and many opportunities (Gassman et al. 2010).
4.1. Benefits of collaborative innovation for the actors involved
The benefits of open innovation are numerous. They include the results of the innovation, the innovation process itself, access to markets (e.g. new markets or a strengthened competitive position in existing markets) or the reputation of the actors involved in the collaboration (Isckia and Lescop 2011).
