Archaeology is a complex discipline which studies the past based on material evidence. There are three main fields of research archaeology: prehistoric, historic and contemporary. Beyond research archaeology, which includes field excavations, systematisation and interpretation of data, there is also theoretical archaeology; other classifications may also include academic archaeology and public archaeology.
