Strategies for Containerizing the Internet Submap

To address the objection that there are too many subnets, routers, and multihomed hosts on the Internet submap, a map builder will add containers (location icons) to the map and label them according to their geography or purpose. Then judicious select, drag, and drop operations will place most of the icons into their appropriate “home” containers. The steps are simple:

  • export MAP_CUSTOMIZATION=true (NNM 5.x only)
  • start ovw and create a new map
  • open the Internet submap
  • turn autolayout off for this submap
  • turn overlay off
  • create containers by adding and labeling location symbols
  • leave routers that connect sites in the Internet submap
  • drag site routers into their appropriate site icons
