X-Windows Differences

The X-Windows model allows the application to operate on a different computer than the display. The application is called the X-client and the display is called the X-server. The two communicate with xlib calls transmitted over TCP/IP. When an X-client executes on a UNIX workstation with a built-in X-server, the highly efficient local loopback driver replaces the physical network connection between the application and the display. It is not unusual for a UNIX-based NNM system to run a local ovw session while ten or more additional concurrent remote users are executing additional ovw sessions.
