introducing line and point defect states into the gap. Various functional devices,
such as filters, switches, modulators and delay lines, can be created by control-
ling the coupling between these defect states. This chapter reviews the temporal
coupled-mode theory formalism that provides the theoretical foundation of
many of these devices.
