The economic value derived from the integrated component must outweigh the cost
of the integration itself. Regretfully for photonics, overcoming the entrenched
industry practices to choose the appropriate technology platform, and accurately
assessing the cost of integration as well as the economic benefit derived, has not
been as simple as Noyce’s argument might suggest.
