Another technique that has been introduced for reducing the size of modulators
is to employ resonant structures. This concept essentially re-circulates the optical
pathlength in the modulated medium to get a larger accumulated phase shift, but
this comes at the expense of narrow-band operation. A representative device
structure is illustrated schematically in Figure 11.25 [53] in which a ring that is
critically coupl ed to a input/output waveguide (i.e., the coupling to ring is roughly
