
Here, we should note that very recently, the use of 2D photonic-crystal slab,
which can make a quasi-3D confinement of light, has also been carried out [51] for
the control of spontaneous emission. A very unique control of spontaneous emis-
sion reflecting the 2D nature of the slab has been demonstrated, where the sponta-
neous emission rate has been suppressed significantly (by a factor of 5 to 15) by the
2D PBG effect, and simultaneously the stored excited carriers have been utilized to
