The investigations described above show that devices can be fabricated that
operate at the band edge of 2D photonic band structures and that operate in stable
single mode over large areas. The continuous room-temperature oscillation of such
a device has been realized [61].
13.3.3 Lattice Point Control and Polarization Mode Control
A donut-shaped far-field pattern has been obtained using a photonic crystal laser, as
shown in Figure 13.20(d). This type of beam shape is important for optical tweezers
[64] and other applications, such as a light source for omniguide photonic-crystal
fibers [65]. However, controlling the polarization mode and beam patterns would
be important steps for further expanding the range of applications for this laser.
