This is by no means an exhaustive list. It is practically impossible to cover all
specialty fiber in one chapter or even in one book. For optical communications-
related specialty fibers, some of them have been discussed in great detail in
previous editions of Optical Fiber Telecommunications. For example, erbium-
doped fibers and amplifiers are discussed in Chapter 2 of the third edition and
Chapter 4 of the fourth edition. Fiber gratings and devices are covered in Chapter 7
of the third edition and Chapter 10 of the fourth edition.
In this chapter, we select a few specialty fiber topics for discussion. Section 2
