a “soft” slicer. Our computer simulation shows that a continuous-time DFE using a
soft slicer has significantly reduced error propagation effect as compared with the
traditional DFE using a hard slicer.

APPLICATIONS
18.4.1 LAN: Transmission Over MMF
Overview
The IEEE 802.3aq 10-Gb/s Ethernet standard (10GBASE-LRM) defines the long-
wavelength (1310 nm) links for LAN, which will achieve a distance of at least
220 m over legacy 62.5 and 50-mm MMFs. This standard defines a serial 10 Gb/s
solution and will enable small form-factor transceivers at low-power dissipation
enabling higher port densities . The 10GBASE-LRM modules are expected to be
the dominant 10-Gb/s modules for LAN by 2008/2009.
