7.6.1 Introduction
To create a viable technology for practical implementation in high-speed fiber optics
communications system, light-intensity modulators have to be designed to fulfill a
large number of boundary conditions. They have to provide a high-frequency inter-
face to the electronic circuits with a drive voltage low enough to comply with the
breakdown limitations imposed by high-speed electronics together with an impedance
level near the standard 50- characteristic impedance of microwave transmission
