is reasonable because they have different standard deviations in M while keeping
<M> the same. It is interesting to note that the 1.0 mm APD has a peak at M = 1,
whereas the 0.1 mm APD has a peak at M = 2. This is consistent with the pdfs in
Figure 8.21. The long tail in the distribution at low field, which is characteristic of
thick multiplication regions, is indicative of a greater probability that a carrier will
travel a longer distance, which in some cases can be the whole multiplication
region, before ionizing. This has also been observed in Ref. [150].
