18.3.2 Optical Amplifiers
The development of optical amplifiers has made it possible to realize systems in
which the optical transmission parameter, G

is greater than unity. They can also be
used to compensate for splitting losses in multipoint distribution systems.
The most important optical amplifier technologies for microwave signal trans-
mission applications are the traveling wave semiconductor laser amplifier (SLA)
[44] and the doped fiber amplifier (DFA) [45]. Figure 18.5 shows the modeled
distortion performance of a typical SLA as a function of the intensity modulation
