5.1 INTRODUCTION
As 40-Gbit/s transmission systems based on electrical time-division multiplexing
(ETDM) have reached product status, the research has moved toward higher bit
rates. An 85-Gbit/s receive r [1] was reported in 2004 on the basis of advanced 40-
Gbit/s optoelectronic devices and the latest generation of high-speed electronics
(SiGe heterojunction bipolar transistor (HBT)) as a first ETDM subsystem operat-
ing at higher speed s. A year later the first full 85-Gbit/s ETDM transmission
