22.1 Introduction to PON

Ever since low-loss telecom grade fibers were available in the mid-1970s, researchers began to look for ways to apply them to the access network, and particularly fiber to the home (FTTH). At the beginning, the techno-economic situation was very challenging, as the fiber was much more expensive than copper, the optoelectronics that would light up the fiber were expensive, and the labor to install the cables (and the associated civil works) was costly. This situation played a big part in guiding the mainstream of research in fiber access.
