7.7. Summary

In this chapter, we gave an overview of features required for signaling in optical networks and the details of GMPLS RSVP-TE and the P-NNI protocols. Our description has covered only the essential features of these protocols. An in-depth discussion would probably fill a whole book. Fortunately, the publicly available specification of these protocols can help the reader in obtaining further information.

Both GMPLS RSVP-TE and P-NNI protocols have been implemented by vendors for use in networks consisting of their own switches. There have also been demonstrations of interoperable UNI and NNI implementations. It remains to be seen when widespread deployments of these protocols in operational networks would occur.
