Chapter 5. Using Rich Media
The iPhone and iPod touch are made for rich media. Powered by QuickTime, movies look gorgeous, music sounds wonderful, and images are a pleasure to look at.
One of the easiest ways to ruin a Mobile Safari’s user experience is to overload them with a huge media file. Toss them your latest uncompressed home movie, and they’ll be retired before the download is complete.
Of course, this is due to the EDGE network that iPhone and iPod touch use. A 5MB file, for example, could take as long as seven minutes to download over EDGE. Add that to the fact that Mobile Safari has that 10MB hard limit for resources, and you’ll see that it’s a good idea to take a nice, long look at all of your rich media.
