Appendix A. Oracle8i And Linux

By now, you surely know how pleased we are that Oracle has been ported to Linux. This appendix describes how you can obtain the Oracle8i database on Linux and install the product on your Linux platform.

Downloading Oracle8i for Linux

If you’re not already familiar with the Oracle Technology Network (OTN) web site (which we introduced in the preface), point your browser to http://technet.oracle.com and browse through it. You’ll need to register and become a member (which is free) to be able to use the web site for downloading software and viewing documentation. The Oracle8i port for Linux is available through OTN.

Alternately, if you want to go straight to the source, FTP on over to ftp://ftp.oracle.com and check the directory /pub/www/otn/linux. Here you’ll find a small but lucrative gold mine of Linux goodies for Oracle. You should also note the location of various patches and bug fixes for the Oracle port to Linux; you might not need them now, but you probably will in the future. You’ll find them at external-ftp.us.oracle.com in the directory /server/patchsets/unix/LINUX.

Because things are moving so quickly in the world ok f Oracle on Linux, we won’t be more specific here about directory and file names and specific instructions. You should be able to find everything you need on these sites to get Oracle going on your Linux system.
