Getting Started . . .

Where to Begin

My goal in this book is to tell you just enough about the mechanics of Oracle to allow you to work out for yourself why your systems have problems. This means I have included only the details that really matter, at a level that makes them easy to understand. It also means I have omitted mention of all sorts of features, mechanisms, and interesting bits that don’t really matter at all—without even explaining why they don’t matter.

Trying to tell you “just enough” does make it hard to pick a starting point. Should I draw the process architecture somewhere on page 1 to give you the “big picture”? (I’d rather not, because most of the processes aren’t really core.) Maybe I should start with transaction ...
