Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) tags designate behaviors or format content in your web pages. HTML tags are embedded tags. Embedded tags do not render in documents. An HTML browser treats a set of reserved words, or keywords, enclosed between less-than and greater-than symbols as tags. That is why you must use the > and < macros, or officially, character entities, to render a greater-than or less-than symbol in a browser.
There are many more macros provided for otherwise reserved characters, such as & for an ampersand or for a space. Macros start by using an ampersand and end with a semicolon.
