Automatic Memory Tuning
Two new parameters, WORKAREA_SIZE_POLICY and PGA_AGGREGATE_TARGET, were added in Oracle 9i release 1. If WORKAREA_SIZE_POLICY is set to TRUE and PGA_AGGREGATE_TARGET is set to a value greater than zero, Oracle will automatically allocate and deallocate memory from the memory regions of individual process global areas (PGAs). A PGA is a private memory area belonging to Oracle server processes, used to hold global variables, cursors, data structures, and process control information.
In previous releases, or when not using the new automatic PGA tuning ability, a DBA had to carefully tune the SORT_AREA_SIZE, HASH_AREA_SIZE, BITMAP_MERGE_AREA_SIZE, and CREATE_BITMAP_AREA_SIZE parameters to achieve optimal sort and join performance. ...
