There are five basic varieties of scalar datatypes: character datatypes, numeric datatypes, datetime datatypes, large object (LOB) datatypes, and datatypes that represent other types of data. This appendix summarizes the characteristics of each of these varieties.
Unless otherwise noted, all scalar datatypes described in the following sections are valid for both the database and for PL/SQL declarations. (Note, however, that some of the datatypes listed under “Collection Datatypes” later in this appendix are valid only for PL/SQL.)
