TIMESTAMP datatypes
There are three new TIMESTAMP datatypes in Oracle9i:
- TIMESTAMP
An extension of the DATE datatype that includes year, month, day, hour, minute, and second values with the following syntax:
TIMESTAMP [(
fractional_second_precision)]where fractional_second_precision specifies the number of digits in the fractional portion of the seconds, from 0 to 9, with a default of 2.
- TIMESTAMP WITH TIMEZONE
A variant of TIMESTAMP than includes a time zone displacement from UTC (Coordinated Universal Time, which is essentially Greenwich Mean Time). The syntax for this datatype is:
TIMESTAMP [(
fractional_second_precision)] WITH TIMEZONE- TIMESTAMP WITH LOCAL TIME ZONE
Similar to TIMESTAMP WITH TIMEZONE, but the time is normalized to the local time zone for the database, and the displacement from UTC is not stored as part of the column data. The syntax for this datatype is:
TIMESTAMP [(
fractional_second_precision)] WITH LOCAL TIMEZONE
