If you are running in ARCHIVELOG mode, your log files are being archived as soon as they are filled. The archiving process automatically backs up the filled log to another location. You may want to copy these archived files to a backup media to protect against the possibility of media corruption.
Typically, you want to force the archiving of the current log after you have backed up your datafiles. To do this, you execute the following command in SQL*Plus:
ALTER SYSTEM ARCHIVE LOG CURRENT;
