Preparing to Run EXPLAIN PLAN

The EXPLAIN PLAN statement needs a table to store the information it gathers. By default, this table is called PLAN_TABLE and it is created by running the script UTLXPLAN.SQL in your schema.

If you want to use a different table for the information produced by EXPLAIN PLAN, Oracle recommends that you use the UTLXPLAN.SQL script and then rename the table.

Because the output of the EXPLAIN PLAN statement may change with new releases, Oracle recommends that you drop and re-create the PLAN_TABLE table with each major upgrade.
