Which Platform and Version?

Oracle runs on an enormous number of hardware and operating system platforms. Most of the information in this book applies to all platforms. When a command or parameter works differently on Windows, Linux, or some other system, we’ve noted that fact.

At the time we went to press, the latest version of Oracle was Oracle9i Release 2. Because Oracle9i is still relatively new, we’ve noted when features were introduced (or removed). So in many sections you will find comments like this: “new with Oracle9i" and “not support after in Oracle8i.” In this way, we hope to accommodate readers who may be running on older versions of Oracle. We have not tried to address systems earlier than Oracle8.
