Special System Privileges

Synopsis

The following system privileges are used to give the user permission to perform an entire set of operations. These system privileges are special because a single privilege grants multiple underlying permissions.

SYSDBA

Gives a user all the permissions needed to start up and shut down an Oracle database. It includes the RESTRICTED SESSION privilege and the following permissions:

ALTER DATABASE
CREATE DATABASE
ARCHIVELOG and RECOVERY
CREATE SPFILE (new with Oracle9i)
SYSOPER

Gives a user a slightly more limited set of permissions, designed for a system operator. It includes the RESTRICTED SESSION privilege and these permissions:

ALTER DATABASE OPEN | MOUNT | BACKUP
ARCHIVELOG and RECOVERY
CREATE SPFILE (new with Oracle9i)
