The IPS is a new software delivery system used in the Oracle Solaris 11 OS. Previous versions of Oracle Solaris used the SVR4 software packaging model, but in order to accommodate the new technologies such as Oracle Solaris zones, the ZFS file system, and the SMF, a new software delivery system was implemented.
