Some applications have tremendous amounts of data stored in tables. The larger the table, the longer it takes to perform certain administrative functions, such as backup and recovery. In addition, the larger the index associated with a table, the longer it takes to read through the leaf blocks to locate the row ID of the row or rows being accessed.
