Assessment and appraisal within organisations allows you to understand performance in the workplace, both in terms of performance levels (such as whether targets are being met) and those things that may be affecting performance (such as the need for training). Why is understanding performance important? Well, information on performance is essential if an organisation wants to be able to analyse successes and failures and maintain success or make improvements to performance. Without some form of appraisal in a workplace, determining the influences on performance is difficult, and thus so is making any improvements needed.
And in addition to understanding past performance, appraisals are an opportunity to make plans for the future – for example, by setting performance targets to match individual and organisational goals.
