are similar to them (in terms of background, interest, hobbies, and the like) and negatively
biased against candidates who are unlike them.
Contrast error: Interviewers have a tendency to compare potential candidates to other
candidates interviewed at the same time, rather than to some absolute standard. For exam-
ple, an average candidate may be rated too highly if several mediocre candidates preceded
her and a candidate might be scored too low if an outstanding applicant preceded her.
