NO SUCH THING AS CONSCRIPTS

We need to make our organizations attractive to the smart people we want to employ. Nowadays most of them have grown up with the web and won’t work for places that don’t allow them to access the tools that they use to keep in touch with the networks that keep them smart.

Social media is going to increasingly affect recruitment. People who have grown up with the web and use social tools are frankly not going to work for organizations that won’t let them continue to use these tools at work. In fact the very reason you employ smart people is often for the networks of other smart people which they are part of. Knowledge is less and less held in individuals and more and more in networks. If you sever the networks you devalue the individual. This is clearly the case where the expertise is in the web itself. Web developers have to maintain links with other web developers to keep up with their skills and knowledge. It is not in your interests to prevent them from doing so. I know of many instances where people have to wait until they get home to get full access to the web and reconnect with their knowledge base. It is ludicrous that they have to do so. This situation will increasingly arise with other skills and groups of experts. The web is about learning and sharing knowledge, and your bright young things will increasingly insist on being allowed to access it.
