Implementations of OSPF up until this RFC supported only Unicast traffic, which is when a message is sent to a single network destination, as opposed to multicast, which is when a message is sent to a section of network addresses.
During the time of the writing of this RFC (1993–1994, which coincided with the Internet and network growth boom), the need to broadcast packets using the multicast technique was required; therefore, this RFC was developed.
This RFC is extremely detailed and is over 100 pages long, allowing the complete detailing of the features and modification necessary for the deployment of the multicast feature. It is also within this RFC that a new acronym was developed—MOSPF. This new acronym ...
