RFC 1247: OSPF Version 2

In RFC 1247, certain configurations of the OSPF virtual links might cause routing loops. To correct this problem, a new bit has been added, called bit “V,” to the routers’ links advertisement. A new algorithm parameter has been added to the OSPF area structure, which indicates if the area supports virtual links. New calculations are to be performed only by the area border routers, which examine all the summary links.

In RFC 1247, an OSPF router cannot originate separate autonomous system (AS) external link advertisements for two networks that have the same IP address but different subnet masks. The link-state ID settings have been altered to allow the host bit portion of the network address to also be set.
