The Connection Principle—Listen and Attend to Connect

When I first started running the rapids, I learned how important it was for the passengers to listen. On the first day of any trip, we usually ran House Rock Rapid. This rapid occurs as the river makes an abrupt right turn. Once in the rapid, the boat crashes through a foam wave that totally buries the passengers and hits them with the force of a cold-water freight train.

I told everyone to hold on tight. I also instructed them that if they were washed off the boat they should calmly wait until they surfaced and assume a sitting position in the water with their feet pointing downstream.
