A Crisis and a Wake-Up Call
Jane (named change to protect her privacy) started with her financial services company right out of law school and quickly moved through the ranks. With her education as an attorney and a role in international human resources, she took pride in being the go-to person when a colleague needed an answer to a tough question or a solution to a complex problem. She regularly worked 12-hour days along with time on the weekends. It was typical for her to travel internationally three weeks a month. She was a specialist in the human resources aspects of mergers and acquisitions, and her company was doing more and more of those. Every time a new deal was announced, Jane was on the integration team, and she found the work “all consuming.” She loved what she was doing, though, and took on a succession of bigger jobs with more and more scope.
