22.4.5 Refining and Lancing
The application of oxygen to the rening of steel in the
EAF was perhaps the rst major development that allowed
electric steelmaking to embark on its path toward being
the steelmaking process of choice because it increased the
rate of production of higher quality steels. The rening of
steel has evolved during the last 40 years with the intro-
duction of new types of injection devices.
22.4.6 Refining
Rening is performed after all of the charge in the fur-
nace is melted. Downstream processes specify an EAF
tap carbon content based on the nal chemistry of the
steel. At this point, chemical analysis of the steel in
