22.6 Postcombustion
22.6.1 Description
Postcombustion is a term that has been used throughout
this document to explain the combustion of CO and H
2
that
is formed in the furnace. In the earlier examples, the 21%
oxygen in the air has been the oxidant for natural postcom-
bustion in the furnace. As shown in the examples earlier,
natural postcombustion contributes a signicant amount
of heat to the steelmaking process. Also demonstrated ear-
lier is the fact as chemical energy in the form of carbon is
