26.1 Introduction
Thermal oxidizers, sometimes called incinerators, are
designed to burn, and in many cases destroy, waste
materials that may sometimes be contaminated with
hazardous substances. The very word “waste” often
means different things to different people. For example,
newspapers thrown into the garbage of the average citi-
zen can be recycled and made into more paper or can be
burned in an incinerator to generate power and steam.
To the citizen the paper is waste, to the paper recycler
the newspapers are feed materials, and to the incinera-
tor the newspapers are a fuel source.
