The two components of cost that are considered here
are the ongoing operating expenses and the capital
equipment costs, which are normally incurred during
the initial implementation of a technology and are amor-
tized over some length of time. It has been assumed here
that the base case for comparison is conventional air/
fuel operation. However, in some applications the base
case may be another technology, like electrical induc-
tion heating in a steel reheat furnace. The economic
analysis should be modied accordingly.
