Using color as a means to communicate is incredibly risky because not all people can differentiate among colors. Color blindness impacts up to 8% of the Caucasian male population (more or less), and even those not so challenged may have some problems with more subtle variations. Poor eyesight, eyestrain, bad computer monitors, room or outdoor lighting—all can impact the perception of color.

If color is not the only means by which information is communicated, though, it can be a terrific way to add a little extra oomph to a process. One such use of color is the use of the color flash, or fade, as it's come to be known in Ajax circles.

A color fade, usually red to white or yellow to white, is a quickly displayed flash of graduated color that highlights information or marks an action. Examples include a red flash just before a row of data is deleted from a database, or a yellow flash to signal an update or modification. A fade should be accompanied by some other indicator that an action has taken place, such as an update to a counter for the number of comments or a statement about successful database deletion.
