Your Palm Pre is capable of truly incredible things, and that's probably one of the reasons why you decided to buy it. Before you go launch down the path of mobile mega-productivity, though, take a minute or two to master a few tricks of the trade to get you off on the right foot. If you've used virtually any other cellphone, many of the concepts in this chapter will already be familiar, but some techniques are unique to webOS and Pre.

This chapter takes a look at the stuff your Pre is made of — the buttons, switches, gizmos, and doohickeys that you'll touch, press, move, and swipe (yup, I said "swipe") to use your phone. After that, you'll fire up the phone for the first time and set up your Palm Profile.

Your Pre at a Glance

Depending on any phone you've used, you might be used to hundreds (well, seemingly hundreds) of buttons on the face of the handset, the sides, the top, and everywhere in between. Palm's taken a starkly different tack with the Pre. Some buttons are still there, granted, but they're concealed extraordinarily well so as to make the phone look and feel like a totally solid, smooth pebble. Pretty, isn't it? Take a look at where all those buttons (and other notable physical features, for that matter) are hiding (see Figure 2-1).
